LINE Pay is built into the LINE app and works at thousands of shops across Japan. Setting it up takes about ten minutes if you have your bank's internet banking details ready. This guide covers the setup process, how to pay in shops, and how to send money to friends through the app.
What you need before you start ¶
To set up LINE Pay, you need a LINE account, a Japanese bank account, and access to your bank's internet banking service. Most major Japanese banks are supported, including Mizuho, MUFG, Sumitomo Mitsui, Japan Post Bank, and many regional banks. You will also need to verify your identity, which LINE Pay does through a photo of your My Number card or driver's licence.
Linking your bank account ¶
Open LINE and tap the Wallet tab at the bottom of the screen. Tap LINE Pay, then Add Payment Method, then Bank Account. Select your bank from the list and follow the prompts to log in to your internet banking. LINE Pay will make a small test transfer to confirm the link. This usually appears in your bank account within one business day. Once confirmed, your bank account is linked and you can top up your LINE Pay balance from it.
Paying in shops ¶
There are two ways to pay with LINE Pay in a shop. The first is to show a QR code from the app, which the cashier scans. The second is to scan the shop's QR code yourself and enter the amount. Which method the shop uses depends on their system. Convenience stores like FamilyMart and Lawson typically use the first method. You can find the QR code by opening LINE Pay and tapping Pay.
Sending money to friends ¶
Open a chat with the person you want to send money to. Tap the plus icon at the bottom left of the chat window and choose LINE Pay. Enter the amount and add a note if you want. Confirm the transfer. The money arrives in their LINE Pay balance immediately. They will receive a notification in the chat. This is useful for splitting restaurant bills or paying back a friend without needing cash.
LINE Pay is most useful when you use it regularly for small everyday purchases. The more you use it, the more natural it becomes. Start with a convenience store purchase and go from there.
